The carbon emissions trading market (ETS) is a market mechanism to realize the goals of “carbon peak” and “carbon neutrality”, and the improvement of the ETS efficiency (CME) is not only conducive to the smooth implementation of the national low-carbon emission reduction policy, but also helps to promote the development of the low-carbon industrial sector. This paper examines the role of CME in driving renewable energy technology innovation (REP) using panel data from China’s ETS pilots (2013–2023). The study employs the super-efficient SBM model to measure CME and the fixed effect model to assess its impact on REP. Results show that CME effectively promotes REP. Additionally, number of emission control enterprises (IECE) involved in emission control moderates this effect positively. Regional analysis reveals that the impact is significant in northern and southern China but not in the central region. The paper concludes with recommendations to enhance CME and promote REP, offering guidance for the development and implementation of ETS policies.
